You may be a person who loves the accountability of going to a gym or personal trainer each week. That’s great if you’ve found something that works for you. My preferences around exercise are a little different, and I’d like to share more.

The way that I maintain all aspects of my health is to align with the natural world. I don’t look at my physical activity as a separate activity from the rest of my life, because it is woven in. I do things naturally, and gyms don’t always feel natural to me, especially with fluorescent lights and lines of machines. I also prefer not to pollute the environment for the sake of exercise, and this keeps me from going to exercise locations that would require that I use a vehicle for transportation.

Here are 12 ways that you can work your body, and build muscles, without weekly dates with the gym. This will be especially helpful if the thought of a gym membership for the New Year sounds more like work than play.

~ Mow your own lawn (You’ll get more points if you use a push mower)

~ Walk whenever it isn’t necessary to drive your car

~ Get out on concrete pathways by your house and scrub the moss off with a wire brush

~ Rake leaves

~ Shovel snow

~ Take a 15-20 minute dance party break during your workday

~ Make love more often

~ Plant and care for a vegetable garden

~ Take a dance class

~ Let your dog take you on a walk

~ Sit up straight on your chair and keep your abs engaged while you’re at the computer

~ Spend an entire week walking through Paris, especially up and down all of the stairs
