I can already hear the coughing, especially as the Northern Hemisphere has transitioned into the colder months. Friends are sick, and children are staying home from school as illness has spread. If you are overworked, exhausted, or travel a lot, you may be more susceptible to becoming ill. It’s no fun to be sick, and if you’re self-employed or even an employee, being sick could mean a loss of income.

The good news is that there are people who haven’t been sick in over 15 years! It’s not a requirement that we get a cold or the flu each year, and I have a few simple ways that you can increase your immunity and get sick less often.

1) First, don’t expect to get sick ~ You can take care of your health so well that it won’t worry you at all when someone else coughs. If you aren’t worried about getting a cold, you probably won’t. If you expect to get sick because you have every previous year, you may get sick. After all, what we focus on expands.

2) Eat seasonally, and consume fewer cold dairy products ~ In the summer, we loved the foods that were meant to cool our bodies down from the heat (such as melons and cold dairy products). Now it’s time for squash, soups, and seasonal root veggies. Cold dairy products tend to produce a lot of mucus in the body, especially in the cold weather, so I suggest eating less ice cream and cold milk and yogurt. Of course, if you love your milk, it can always be heated and spiced so it is less of a shock to your body.

3) Use hand sanitizers made with plant essences  ~  You’ll find a lot of alcohol-based sanitizers available now. They work, but they sometimes contain toxic ingredients. I stick with hand sanitizers that are made with a little bit of alcohol, plus essential oils from plants. The EO brand works well, and comes with ingredients such as organic lavender oil, orange oil, and eucalyptus to naturally kill germs. These sanitizers also work well as a back-up deodorant.

4) Oil pull every day  ~ This is a fun technique that I’ve used extensively over the past few months. Begin with a spoonful of sesame or coconut oil (I prefer coconut since it tastes great and is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal). Swish it around in your mouth for 20 minutes or more. Spit the oil in the toilet or sink when you’re done, and you’ve just removed toxins, bacteria, and heavy metals from your body. Oil pulling is great as a daily way to prevent illness, and it’s also wonderful for the health of your teeth and gums.

5) Use rosemary ~ Many of us with a yard and herb garden have a bush of rosemary growing in the back. Did you know that as a tea, rosemary can be used to break up stuffy congestion? It’s something you can drink if you feel like you may be getting sick. There are also lots of other ways to use this herb, and whether you choose to chew on a sprig of it, or use the oil, you’ll benefit from this simple and powerful plant.

Now you’ll be much less likely to hide from your sick friends and colleagues!
